Roots: The Kings
Sunday Apr 09, 2017
Sunday Apr 09, 2017
How do you measure success? Within the lineage of Jesus is a list of kings who were given a kind of report card in history. We can learn from their report cards as we examine our own lives.
1 Kings 11:9-10 (NLT) 9 The LORD was very angry with Solomon, for his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. 10 He had warned Solomon specifically about worshiping other gods, but Solomon did not listen to the LORD’s command.
BIG IDEA: Life’s final exam hinges on one questions: Where did you place your trust?

Roots: David + Bathsheba - Michal
Sunday Apr 02, 2017
Sunday Apr 02, 2017
King David is one of the most celebrated people in history. The slayer of Goliath and writer of psalms is also famous for his affair with Bathsheba. Their son Solomon became heir to the throne and ancestor to Jesus. We’re going to branch out from Jesus’s family tree a little to see what we can learn from David’s less famous first wife Michal, the princess bride.
1 Samuel 18:20 (NLT) In the meantime, Saul’s daughter Michal had fallen in love with David, and Saul was delighted when he heard about it.
BIG IDEA: Love is not resentful (1 Corinthians 13:5).

Roots: Boaz + Ruth

Sunday Mar 26, 2017
Some of the most beautiful natural and man-made wonders in the world amaze us because of how they stand out against their surroundings. Boaz and Ruth were like that. They remind us that when we follow the Lord, we will stand out. This is beautiful to God and to those who seek Him.
Ruth 2:12 (NLT) [Boaz speaking to Ruth] “May the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge, reward you fully for what you have done.”
Ruth 3:9 (NLT) “Who are you?” [Boaz] asked. “I am your servant Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your covering over me, for you are my family redeemer.”
BIG IDEA: Faithful disciples of Christ are a beautiful contrast in a fallen world.

Roots: Salmon + Rahab

NOTE: There was an issue with the recording. At 18:51, there is a brief break in the sermon before it resumes.
Before we give up on the people around us, we need to remember that God didn’t give up on us. He is in the business of making heroes out of some of the people we would least expect.
Hebrews 11:31 (NLT) It was by FAITH that Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed with the people in her city who refused to obey God. For she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.
James 2:25 (NLT) Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her ACTIONS when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road.
BIG IDEA: God incorporates us into His family as we live out our FAITH in ACTION.

Roots: Judah + Tamar
Sunday Mar 12, 2017
Sunday Mar 12, 2017
We all make mistakes. We have areas of our lives where we benefit from correction and instruction. So why is it so hard to receive discipline even when it’s for our own good? The account of Judah and Tamar shows us that there is room in the lineage of Jesus for error, humility, and correction.
Genesis 38:26 (NLT) Judah recognized them immediately and said, “She is more righteous than I am, because I didn’t arrange for her to marry my son Shelah.” And Judah never slept with Tamar again.
BIG IDEA: Everyone makes foolish choices sometimes. A wise person accepts correction.

Roots: Jacob + Leah
Sunday Mar 05, 2017
Sunday Mar 05, 2017
As we continue to look into the lineage of Jesus we’ll see the hurt that can be caused when we let competition and jealousy motivate us. But even in the midst of a bitter feud, God advances His plan to bring hope and peace. And who couldn’t use a little more hope and peace today?
Genesis 29:35 (NLT) Once again Leah became pregnant and gave birth to another son. She named him Judah, for she said, “Now I will praise the LORD!” And then she stopped having children.
BIG IDEA: No matter what you experienced yesterday, today is a day to praise the Lord.
THINK FAST! Consider fasting from food for a meal this week, or even for a full day, and let your hunger prompt you praise God for who He is. This is a good reminder that even when it feels natural to grumble, we can choose to be grateful. Psalm 118 is a good guide to help you praise God.

Roots: Isaac + Rebekah
Sunday Feb 26, 2017
Sunday Feb 26, 2017
In the lineage of Jesus, Isaac and Rebecca are perhaps the best example of a loving husband and wife. As we learn from the ancestors of Jesus, we learn about our own spiritual heritage and find ourselves more deeply rooted in Christ.
Genesis 24:67 (NLT) And Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent, and she became his wife. He loved her deeply, and she was a special comfort to him after the death of his mother.
BIG IDEA: Seek God’s will in order to love others well.
THINK FAST! Fasting is a way of divorcing ourselves from the temporary happiness of stuff in order to seek the eternal holiness of God. What is something you could stop for a month, while replacing it with prayer and Scripture?
What’s Your “Love Language”?
Sometimes people know that they care for each other deeply, but they don’t feel loved. A person could be giving and receiving love a certain way, and the person they care for could express love in a very different way--like they are speaking foreign languages. Roots: Abraham + Sarah
In generations past, ancestry was critically important in understanding a person’s identity and their place in society. Modern disciples of Jesus have a spiritual ancestry that helps us understand our identity, and helps us grow to be a blessing to the world.
Matthew 1:1 (NLT) This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham
Hebrews 12:1 (NLT) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
BIG IDEA: Even though we can’t keep up with perfection, we must faithfully run with perseverance.
MORE TO THE STORY: Genesis 12-22 covers the calling of Abram and continues through God’s ultimate test of his faith. Prayerfully read it this week, and see how God grows your faith.
THINK FAST! What is something you could fast from during the month of March that would help you fix your eyes on Christ and strip off a sin that has been tripping you up?

Roots Intro
In generations past, ancestry was critically important in understanding a person’s identity and their place in society. Modern disciples of Jesus have a spiritual ancestry that helps us understand our identity, and helps us grow to be a blessing to the world.
Colossians 2:6-7 (NLT) 6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
