All Things New: Growing in “Whatever It Takes”
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10). There are amazing promises packed into that single verse. We’re going to consider what it will take for us to unpack those promises together as we experience God’s plan for us.
KEY VERSES:
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Ephesians 3:16-17 (NLT) 16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.
BIG IDEA: God saving us is not our reward for good works; good works are our response to God saving us.
THIS WEEK: Read Paul’s letter to the disciples in Ephesus (Ephesians Chapters 1-6). Make a note of anything particularly encouraging or challenging. Take one or two of those challenging points, and invite God to chisel away your old life this week.

THIS WEEK: All Things New: Growing in Biblical Teaching
Whether we are a disciple of Jesus or not, everyone will go through difficulties in life. God wants to help us! We receive His help by first hearing and then following His instructions.
KEY VERSES: Matthew 7:24 (NLT) Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.
BIG IDEA: The loss from ignoring Jesus is more painful than the work of following Him.
THIS NEXT WEEK: Read “The Sermon on the Mount” in Matthew Chapters 5, 6 and 7. Make a note of anything particularly encouraging or challenging. Take one or two of those challenging points, and pray to ask God what He would have you do to follow this teaching of Jesus this week.

Living a new life in Christ requires a new approach to interacting with people. Jesus says we’ll experience meaning, purpose and joy in life as we remain in Him; and remaining in Him involves going out of our way to love others.
KEY VERSES: John 15:12-13 (NLT) 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
BIG IDEA: Jesus says remaining IN Him involves going OUT of our way to love others.
Biblical Communication Guidelines
-
I will overlook minor offenses. (Ephesians 4:2; Proverbs 19:11)
-
When I have a problem with another person, I will go to that person promptly and privately, only involving a few select others if the conflict persists. (Matthew 18:15-17; Proverbs 28:23)
-
I will set aside my own pride in the face of conflict, and humbly pursue a course of biblical reconciliation as recommended by the church leadership. (1 Peter 5:5; Ephesians 4:2)
-
When individuals have a problem with me, I want them to come to me privately; I will be open to them when they come. (Proverbs 15:31-32; Matthew 18:15)
-
When someone has a problem with me, and comes to you, send that person to me. I’ll do the same for you. (Proverbs 26:20; Matthew 18:15)
-
When I am wondering if someone has a problem with me, I will go to them and ask promptly. (Matthew 5:23-24)
-
I will not assume what others are thinking and feeling, or speak for others in regards to what they are thinking or feeling. (Matthew 18:15, 5:23-24)
-
I will honor others by treating personal information and private conversations as confidential. (Proverbs 11:13)
I will refrain from all gossip and slander, only speaking that which encourages and builds up others. (Ephesians 4:29)

All Things New: Growing In Christ
Like swimming upstream, there is no standing still in life; you are either moving forward, or you are slipping back. It can feel exhausting! But God doesn’t expect us to do anything on our own. He provides the perfect plan and the strength to see it through. As we stick with Him, He’ll grow us into people of purpose.
KEY VERSES:
John 15:5 (NLT) Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
BIG IDEA: As we obey the Greatest Command (Love God, Love Your Neighbor), we will experience the first command: BE FRUITFUL.

THIS WEEK: All Things New: Grafted into a “Whatever It Takes” Attitude
People who are grafted into God’s family tree are to be like Jesus; He was both scandalously loving and utterly holy. Our pursuit of Christ-likeness requires us to be militant and intolerant about the sin within us, doing whatever it takes to let Him transform us and renew our minds.
KEY VERSES:
Exodus 20:3-5a (NLT) You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.
See also: Matthew 5:27-30 (Jesus’ Call for Radical Amputation). 2 Kings 22-23 (King Josiah’s Idol Smash-a-Thon).
BIG IDEA: When a good thing becomes a “god” thing, that’s a bad thing.
Grafted by God (Romans 11:17-18)
People with significant DIFFERENCES finding UNITY in Christ. (Galatians 3:26-29)
The pursuit of HAPPINESS merging with the pursuit of HOLINESS. (Psalm 1)
Getting rid of IDOLS. (Exodus 20:3-5)

A tree planted by a riverbank has a steady source of nourishment, so it prospers. People who are grafted into God’s family tree find nourishment in His Word, the Bible. We know this, but it’s easy to get distracted or make excuses. Let’s encourage each other as we let our roots grow deep into biblical teaching.
KEY VERSES:
Psalm 1:1-3 (NLT) 1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
BIG IDEA: In the end, the pursuit of ultimate happiness merges with the pursuit of holiness.

As Jesus was praying just before He was arrested, (John 17:13), he prayed
“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the
world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.”
This morning we will examine 3 important truths that help us to
experience joy on the way to meet Jesus.
I. Joy is always ____________ to those who _______________.
a. Luke 1:46-49 -- -“And Mary said: My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…..
b. Galatians 5:22-23
II. Joy is given to those who are thankful _____ all things and _________
all things.
a. Ephesians 5:20, I Thessalonians 5:16-18, James 1:2-3
b. Ann Voskamp – One Thousand Gifts – “Praying with eyes wide open
enables one to pray without ceasing.”
III. Humility is the God given soil (_________) that grows ___________
that yields ____________ ___________!!!
Hebrews 12:2, Philippians 2:6-7
a. Martin Luther – “God created the world out of nothing and as long as
we are nothing, He can create something out of us.”
b. Henry Ward Beecher – “ How much larger our lives would be if we
could become smaller in it."
c. Jesus – “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me, yet not my
will, but yours be done.” Luke 22:42
GOD IS ALWAYS GOOD AND HE ALWAYS LOVES ME!

All Things New: Grafted into Authentic Community
Sunday Sep 25, 2016
Sunday Sep 25, 2016
The world around us seems to be particularly divisive lately. People choose a side, and then curse anyone who has a different view. But when God adopts us as His children, He truly expects us to live as a family ought to. The promise is that He created us with significant differences in order to fit together perfectly, unified by Christ.
KEY VERSES:
Galatians 3:26-28 (NLT) 26 For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on the character of Christ, like putting on new clothes. 28 There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.
BIG IDEA: We experience Authentic Community when people with significant differences find unity in Christ.

God’s plan is to make all things new, including you! While God’s Big Renewal is a future plan, we can experience ongoing renewal every day. Are you feeling burned out? Lacking direction? Fearful of the future? Ashamed of the past? Be part of the journey to experience a New Day in Him!
KEY VERSES:
Romans 11:17 (NLT) But some of these branches from Abraham’s tree—some of the people of Israel—have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special olive tree.
God’s Blessing can be understood as:
- God’s FAVOR. (Numbers 6:26)
- RECONCILIATION with God. (Psalm 24:5)
- EVERLASTING LIFE. (Psalm 133:3)
- Relief from SUFFERING. (Psalm 3:8)
- MEANING and PURPOSE. (2 Samuel 7:29)
