Rev01ution: Checkpoint

Our internal revolution happens when we stop loving what the world offers, and start loving God by obeying Him.

1 John 2:15-17 (NLT) 15  Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16  For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17  And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

Rev01ution: Fear of the Lord

Many of us, probably most, have a conception of Jesus as this European looking, tall, blue-eyed gentle man who is benevolent to all and walks around holding the hands of children and carrying a lamb in his arms.  Certainly no one to be feared; He is too loving to be feared.  Throughout Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, we are told repeatedly that to fear the Lord leads to wisdom (Psalm 111:10).

But we are also told NOT to fear; Luke 1:74 "We have been rescued from our enemies so we can serve God without fear." Today we discover the difference between fear in the world and the fear of God.

Rev01ution: From Shame to Humility

Big Idea: God seeks us out in our shame, and honors us when we humble ourselves.

Scripture: James 4:7-10 "So humble yourselves before God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Come close to God, and God will come close to you.  Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for the loyalty is divided between God and the world.  Let there be tears for what you have done.  Let there be sorrow and deep grief.  Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy.  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

Rev01ution: Fasting and Feasting

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 4:1-4 (NLT) 1  Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2  For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. 3  During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4  But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Jeremiah 15:16 (NLT)  When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies.  

BIG IDEA: When we fast from something, it is important that we also feast on nourishment from God’s Word.

ACTION STEPS: Use the 30-day Fasting Guide to help you plan a fast (and a feast on God’s Word) that is both challenging and safe for you, starting October 1. Plug into a small group to help you with planning and support.

Rev01ution: Think Fast

Fasting is ultimately an expression of humility and dependence on God.  
SCRIPTURE: Philippians 4:11-13 (NLT) 11  Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12  I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13  For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
