Matthew 13:21 (NLT) But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. He appointed you to GO!
Tuesday Dec 11, 2012
Tuesday Dec 11, 2012
The Spiritual Journey of Bilbo Baggins, part II Matthew 8:21-22 (NLT) 21 Another of his disciples said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead.” “That leaves you just ten minutes. You will have to run,” said Gandalf. “But--,” said Bilbo. “No time for it,” said the wizard. “But--,” said Bilbo again. “No time for that either! Off you go!” --from The Hobbit, Chapter II Key Question: In what aspect of your life are you resisting the need to trust God? Questions for Reflection and Discussion Read Luke 14:25-35. How would you explain this in your own words? In the passage above, Jesus doesn't seem to have a good marketing plan. What was His goal? What can the church learn from His approach? What are some of the costs of following Jesus that you have discovered personally? What makes being a disciple worth the high price? What luggage might God be asking you to leave behind in order to move forward on your Spiritual Journey? He chose you
Monday Dec 03, 2012
Monday Dec 03, 2012
The Spiritual Journey of Bilbo Baggins John 15:16 (NLT) You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. Let’s have no more argument. I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you…There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. --from The Hobbit, Chapter I Key Question: How have you seen God inviting you to move from resisting Him to receiving Him? Questions for Reflection and Discussion Read Romans 9:10-24. How would you explain this in your own words? Read Romans 10:9-13. While Romans 9 suggests that God calls us, Romans 10 suggests that we call on God. How can we reconcile these ideas? There is a centuries-long debate about whether: (a) God wants everyone to be saved, but only a few people actually choose God, or (b) Everyone deserves destruction, but God mercifully chooses to save a few. Does this debate matter to you? Why or why not? The fact that you are reading this suggests that God is moving in your life—He is pursuing you. What do you see as the next step He is asking you to take?
